The course will teach the history and literature of the Old and New Testaments, and the influence of the Bible on "laws, history, government, literature, art, music, customs, morals, values and culture," according to the bill.

A last-minute proposal by Ed Ableser, a Tempe Democrat, to add the Book of Mormon and two other Mormon texts to the course was denied.
Of course, it was denied. And so should this course be denied.
I think that a comparative religion course that discussed ancient religions and laws would be enlightening.
Students should learn of "The Book of the Dead"...

The nature of the afterlife which the dead person enjoyed is difficult to define, because of the differing traditions within Ancient Egyptian religion. In the Book of the Dead, the dead were taken into the presence of the god Osiris, who was confined to the subterranean Duat. There are also spells to enable the ba or akh of the dead to join Ra as he travelled the sky in his sun-barque, and help him fight off Apep.[35] As well as joining the Gods, the Book of the Dead also depicts the dead living on in the 'Field of Reeds', a paradisaical likeness of the real world.
If all the obstacles of the Duat could be negotiated, the deceased would be judged in the Weighing of the Heart ritual, depicted in Spell 125. The deceased was led by the god Anubis into the presence of Osiris. There, the dead person swore that he had not committed any sin from a list of 42 sins,[43] reciting a text known as the "Negative Confession".
Students should learn of ancient law systems ...including the Code of Hammurabi (which mirrors and pre-dates the Ten Commandments) as well as many others.

It is never acceptable or legal for public schools to teach the Bible as fact or as a basis for US laws, morals, or culture because that is complete BS.

Good thing it's only an elective. But I'm sure these fascist theocrats will push for the next obvious step. Mandatory bible studies. No others. Just the bible!

Sounds good to me. Would rather it to go through the Torah, Bible and Qur'an, as the combination has had a much larger impact on western culture. Yes I know most of the Torah is subsumed by the Bible and the Qur'an.

I feel it wrong and no student should be force to take this class, religion belong in your homes not in school. I do not believe in any religion and feel it is being push on to everyone which is wrong, If a person believe in religion that fine but kept it to yourself and stop trying to push your belief on to other.
