SAVANNAH, Ga. (CN) - A married couple sued Savannah to save the life of their dog, Oreo, which they say the city seized for biting a little girl who trespassed and "teased and tormented" the dog by playing with his food bowl in front of him.

The Wootens claim that Savannah Chatham Animal Control kept Oreo in unsanitary, inhumane conditions, denied him medical treatment and "vilified" him by called him a "pit bull mix breed" though they knew he is a full-blooded American bulldog.

Sounds like the authorities are over reacting big time. They must have something against this couple.

Definitely, especially since the yard is fenced in.She should not have been in the yard.

It reads.. a little girl... how old.. does it say? Their fence should not be that accessible for a young kid to open..again.. if the kid is young should be watched.. if the people who own the dog did everything they could.. like fencing and keeping the dog in that area.. then the only problem would be for them is access to the inside of the fence.. and the care of the dog and what kind of surroundings it lived in..

Parents should be watching their young children 24-7 .. period.

Why isn't the child being charged with trespassing and mischief?

Why aren't the parents being charged with neglect?

Neither the dog or the owners did a damned thing wrong.

I don't know but maybe we could get those parents into some kind of child raising classes and get them some birth control.

A 6 year old kid should be watched at all times.. parental neglect 100%.. the dog was fenced in and the owners of this dog did the correct thing by having the dog in the fenced in area.. if the child was being watched none of this would of happened.

Yeah, it's sad the little girl got bit in the face and had to get stitches, I'm sure that was pretty scary for her...but she should never have been in that back yard to begin with. Her parents are 100% at fault in this case and these people deserve to have their dog returned yesterday IMO. Hopefully the little girl learned her lesson, and more importantly I hope her parents did to and start paying more attention to their daughter.
