Charis wrote on a market research report the other day that essentially said that electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids need an iCar to really get the public gung-ho about them. In other words, stop giving us the ‘green’ pitch that I (and probably you) love, but that most folks meet with relative indifference, and give us the “YOU NEED THIS OR YOU WILL BE SO UNCOOL” pitch.

As a car company, BMW is an unlikely champion of green cars. But between the electric Mini E, its clean turbodiesel engines, heat-recapturing technology, and a sub-brand of plug-in hybrid vehicles like the i3 and i8, BMW is really looking like a leader in clean performance technology.

How is the ability to perform well in snow a "cool" thing instead of a necessity in much of the USA?
Cool or not. Winter driving ability is also very important in Germany (and many other countries they export to). BMW's are very well balanced cars that can do well in any condition. They take a lot of pride in their 50/50 weight balance. In my old 3-series, there were two battery mounts--one under the hood and one in the trunk. For the heavier 6-cylinder cars, the battery goes in the trunk. The light 4-cylinder cars get the battery under the hood. That is is how import perfect weight balance is to them.
I have driven two rear-drive BMW's year-round for 20 years. They are great in the snow as long as you use appropriate tires. The sporty summer tires that my current one came with will obviously not bite into snow (no cross tread). I have a set of winters I use from December through March. There has not been a storm that kept me home in all those years.

That's the first Beemer I've been interested in since the M1!
Shucks, I guess since the only one I've owned was an '85 K100RS M I was bound to make that faux pas... or would that be, "schlüpfen"?
:)
Funny. I was unaware of the subtlety until I was told by a bike owner. While I am not a biker, I know they do make some nice bikes.
