As automakers are starting to bring electric vehicle (EV) technology into the mainstream, conservative media outlets have repeatedly misled consumers about electric cars by trying to paint them as environmentally harmful and unsafe, among other false claims.

FACT: EV Sales Topped First-Year Hybrid Sales Despite Recession

EV Sales In 2011 Were Significantly Higher Than The First Year Hybrid Sales. From a post by the Rocky Mountain Institute:

Figures this week showed that the first mass-produced electric cars in the United States, the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, had total sales of 17,345 in 2011, the first year in which they were available. Compared with sales of 9,350 gas-electric hybrids in 2000, the first year the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius were offered in the U.S.--where total hybrid sales have now topped 2 million--17,000 might seem like a decent start for EVs. I remember watching "Who Killed the Electric Car" and was angered at the power that Big Oil had to not only halt production of the electric car, but they also had all of them destroyed.

I am overjoyed that Big Oil is finally losing some of its stranglehold on preventing new technology aimed at protecting our environment and our future.

Yeah, right!

Par,

I think everyone's pretty much on board with that atm. I mean, between the yo-yo's at the Weekly Wailing Pump (gas station) and BP and all of the military actions in the Middle East....

Really, it's no wonder why people have been pushing the tech to bring it mainstream. Of course the adoption is going to be slow given the price-tag of the items in question (cars in general are just a huge long-term investment) but, I think too many early adopters have already taken the plunge to put that particular genie back in the bottle now. Which is good.

:)

Besides, have you seen the new EVs? They're so cool!

I have .. and each time I do it reminds me of the 50's ..when new styles were coming out almost every week it seemed.. then the early 60's.. the Camaro and Firebird.. Mustang '66'...the EVs are sleek..

I remember buying a brand new car for around $3,000.00.. today that wouldn't be enough in many cases for a years payment on 5-6 year loan...today's cars are is more than what it cost me to put an addition on my home..and then some.

The car dealerships are pushing more towards leases these days than they are of buying .. because they can make money from the lease.. and just fix up the car and then sell it as used.. making even more money.. so.. maybe somewhere on this planet.. some dealers would bargain to make a lease out of one..

Cheaper to lease for the consumer.. from what I've seen than it is to afford a $350 a month payment each month or more...

Yeah, right!

Can't and don't want to lease!

Seriously. I'm like most around me- I'd rather go by bus than "rent" something....

See, the problem, when it comes to leasing is that- while it may be cheaper for the "owner"...

The truth is that, in the end, it comes down to this: if my landlord refuses or decides to be a little slow on fixing that dripping faucet- that's annoying, but livable.....

If the owner of the car company decides that they don't want to replace the brakes on the other hand (making it impossible to actually drive that car)... I'm out of a job- out of money and, (according to many) not even worth the hassle of being kept alive anymore (because I've bee fired for not going to work)....

Truth is?

I'm tired of being in indebted servitude to whatever company of the week- while paying out money to them for that supposed "honor"...

No.

Oh no. I am done with that and come hell or high water- pain or starvation.... I WILL get to a point where I can tell these a##holes JUST what to do!!!!.....

I OWN my car, and, I will nurse and help him along until the day he dies- but, until then? (You can have my Balto when the Jaws-of-Life prizes me from his safe-and-warm-and yes! Even, steelish embrace!)

Cope with it.

Interesting article -- Thanks. EVs have come a long way in a few years.
