As the sovereign debt crisis unfolds in Europe, onlookers have questioned whether the region will stay committed to renewable energy. The answer so far is “yes.”

Even with a few countries pulling back on government support of the industry because of fiscal troubles, 2011 was still a huge year for deployment — with wind and solar alone representing almost 70% of new capacity.

Great news, what is even greater is that the individuals that install PV panels in their own Homes, are becoming self-sufficient, and hence are the " front line " cutting the umbilical cord from Governments,..

Absolutely... This is one area where each homeowner can set up systems, and be independent from the rest.. However, it is better to be on the grid than off the grid.. if something happens to the system one has until it is fixed.

Yes, when most if not all are on the grid, then the grid becomes a storage device, and in the case say in Europe where the countries are inter-joined in the Electricity grid that means that the " sun shines " more hours and hence more direct solar power.

In the past we talked about Counterweights and momentum wheels as storage devices, with that one can have 24/7 Solar clean renewable energy, since the Sun raises each day :-) and when the SUN fails to rise, electricity will be the least of the problems.
