GOP Continues To Oppose Contraception Coverage Plan Now Supported By Large Catholic Institutions

The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops almost immediately rejected a compromise on requiring contraception coverage that the Obama administration announced on Friday, and Republicans have continued to attack the accommodation. Under the compromise, religious institutions will not be required to provide contraceptive coverage because insurers will provide contraception directly to employees at no cost, completely removing religious institutions from the equation. But this deal was not enough to satisfy conservative opposition.

And Ryan and his Republican colleagues are arguing against a policy that a majority of Catholic voters support and that major Catholic organizations favor, including the Catholic Health Association, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and Catholic Charities USA. The Rev. John Jenkins, president of the Catholic-affiliated University of Notre Dame, supported President Obama’s compromise, calling it a “a welcome step toward recognizing the freedom of religious institutions to abide by the principles that define their respective missions.”

They're not only rejecting the compromise, they're doubling down on the crazy by by proposing to allow businesses to deny employees any preventive health service they object to on moral grounds.

Women to them.. are just 2nd class citizens.. Like the practice in China.. the woman walks 10 paces back of the male...they work the home, take care of the offspring.. they are nothing but tied down to the home and family.. they get their marching orders from their owner .. the male of the family.

Who gets his marching orders from the Pope....like in the Crusades. The RCC will use anyone and everyone to fill their coffers.

Women to them.. are just 2nd class citizens.

Children don't even rate that high.

In the 1970s, pedophilia was theorized as something fully in conformity with man and even with children," the pope said. "It was maintained - even within the realm of Catholic theology - that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a 'better than' and a 'worse than.' Nothing is good or bad in itself."

There is an even more fundamental argument here that should be at the forefront of this discussion. Can non-Catholics who work at these institutions, particularly hospitals, be forced to abide by Catholic doctrine or beliefs? If that's the case, maybe the employees of these institutions should show proof of Baptism and go to Confession at least weekly. Can other religions make their employees show proof of circumcision? This is, of course, ridiculous. These Catholic businesses cannot survive without non-Catholic employees, so they need to compromise and make appropriate accommodation. If not, I would suggest all of these employees, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, seek positions in other institutions. Obama's plan does nothing to violate Catholic doctrine, but those who oppose his plan certainly do violate human rights.

Agreed.

The GOP supports a monarchy where they rule. The Pope supports a theocracy where he rules. This is not a marriage made in heaven and the divorce will be very painful and costly to both of them.

In the meantime, US citizens must assert our freedoms guaranteed in our constitution and cast votes against the monarchy and quit funding the Pope and his organization bent on global domination.

The GOP needs to be reminded that we are their employers, and the Pope's authority needs to be limited to attending the spiritual needs of his followers ... not abusing and controlling their earthly bodies.

Cowgirl - Well said. BTW, don't the Catholics preach that God gave man free will? How ironic that they seem to always want to take it away. If you believe in a god, shouldn't that god be your judge and not other men?

Thank you, Helpmeunderstand1

I really don't know what the Catholics preach. However, the churches that I have attended believe in man's free will.

How ironic that they seem to always want to take it away.

I find it extremely controlling and unacceptable. Oppression is oppression no matter whether religious or any other adjective is placed before it.

If you believe in a god, shouldn't that god be your judge and not other men?

That how the system is set up, however, I have yet to see anyone abide by it. They usurp their God's orders and power in doing so. I don't know if this is caused by lack of understanding or lack of intelligence or if they are just gaming the system for their own gain. Again, it is controlling and unacceptable and should not be tolerated and certainly never backed by government decree.

I am not a constitutional scholar, but I do know that if the people who wrote it were deists, and promoted religious tolerance so the US would hopefully repeat the Crusades and no religious group would ever have the control and power to oppress anyone into following their particular brand of dogma.
