Cities with the most speed traps

When lead-footed drivers get snagged and ticketed, their downfall might have been passing a speed trap where a cop was using radar or a laser, or maybe the driver passed a speed camera. However, as technology improves traffic enforcement, it is also progressing on the side of the speeder. Now joining the radar detector is crowd-sourced reporting of speed traps, a virtual warning system using the Internet and a mobile app.

10. Austin, TX

Law enforcement in the capital of Texas has a reputation for handing out speeding tickets to motorists only one to three miles per hour over the posted limits, says Farrell. "Trapster users have posted on Trapster"s Facebook page that many speed limits drop quickly, and happen to have heavy police ‘speed enforcement" in those areas."

I request the police to do more.. but I get the excuse because of budget cuts and going from 80 police officers to 64 has hampered a lot of things they would like to do.. so they put the electronic sign on the side of the road.. so drivers can calibrate their speed..useless thing.. and they give out more warnings according to their logs (accessed online).. than they do tickets.

I live in a 30mph are.. and next to a school zone (20mph).. and people are going 45-50+.. I just love being tailgated right into my driveway.. and my mailbox has been hit a few times.. Now I have a concrete column that I have it on with iron rods in it.. let them hit it now.lol

It isn't only pulling people over for speeding.. it is also what one can find out about the people .. Like uninsured, unlicensed, felony warrants, drinking and driving.. etc.. My town on my road one year had over 367 stops.. and they found many people like that.

I am visiting Phoenix and I can say if you drive the speed limit you will get ran over three times. From my understanding they used to have speed cameras (with a warning sign to their presence) but they got rid of them. If there is one state that could use revenue generated from speeding it is this one. It is not uncommon to be tailgated when doing 10 MPH over the speed limit and that is in the city...the highway well lets just say the Phoenix Speedway has competition everyday.

I imagine the authorities will find a way to shut this down, just like they've capped the app that would show locations of road checks. I'm distressed at the ease with which law enforcement can curtail information about their actions on the web.

Well, if there is a speed trap, I'be been caught in it...

Those that suddenly go from 55 mph to 25 mph, and you have to actually brake to get down to that speed, you can't just drift down to that speed in the amount of road available. Frankly, that's not fair-- they need to put a warning sign up or something, "Reduced Speed Ahead"-- but they don't, so they might just WANT to catch you!

"...they might just WANT to catch you!"

Oh, no, Dowser. Our bonnie boys in blue wouldn't use chicanery to boost their income, would they? /s IMO, speed traps are the oldest version of police corruption in history; probably the ancient Romans had "chariot chasers" ready to pull you over for doing 6 in a 5 zone.

Oh, I agree! In Illinois, if you get caught in a speed trap, the first question they ask you is, "Can you make bail?"

BAIL????

Scared the bejeeebers out of me!

No! The speed limit sign was covered by a tree! I didn't see it at all! I was doing 45 in a 35, and it should have been 55... no houses, no kids, out in the middle of nowhere. I paid the $100 and went on my way, but egad. :-)

I hope you engaged the traffic court on this one.. because that is time well spent .. take a pic..bring it in.. and show them.. then you say "See".. and money saved.. insurance $ saved..

I couldn't-- I had to get to where I was going for a job, and was then out in the field for the next month...

It made no difference to my insurance at the time, (almost 30 years ago), as KY didn't care if you got a ticket in Illinois. They still don't, to be honest.

It was easier to pay the fine than lose a day's pay fighting it.

Illinois was doing the same thing back in the '60's. My whole family cooled its heels for a day while my dad tried to figure out how to get the 'bail money', which was just an inflated fine.

The Midwest has taken its hits lately, from the brouhaha in WI (where I grew up), to OH's labor union de-cert and deceptive campaign scandals to the AR, OK and KS wacky bible belt shenanigans. Is it fracking fluid in the water supply, or are sunspots to blame?
