For years now, I have known three things: 1) a ton of people support solar power (government support for it, installing much more, etc.), 2) under 1% of U.S. electricity supply comes from solar, 3) one of the biggest barriers (if not THE biggest barrier) to people going solar is lack of information (not that the information doesn’t exist, just that people aren’t aware of it and often don’t know where to find it).

3. How Much Electricity Do You Need?
Your next step is to assess how much energy your home consumes per month. This is a good way to see if solar power is right for you, and what percentage of your monthly costs you can offset with solar. For example, the EIA’s latest evaluation of electricity use in American homes shows that in 2010, the average home consumed 958 kilowatt-hours per month. If you can reduce your energy below this mark, you’ll only require a small-to-medium solar power system. To learn more about the percentage of electricity that each device in a home uses, and how to reduce that amount, check the EIA FAQs.

How do we get the mainstream media to give more coverage to developments in renewable, and especially distributed renewable, energy. I have heard very little on the local news or in the local papers about two laws enacted this summer in NY on loan programs and net metering. Yet this information is crucial for deciding if renewable energy installations make sense for a homeowner.

What we as citizens could do.. and I see this regularly on the Boston channels.. WBZ & WHDH.. where they ask for citizens to send in their pictures they take if there is any news happening...
What better chance when the meteorologist and news of that station are asking for people to take photos and send them in.. to send in for example: A picture of a wind turbine at sunset/sunrise.. and include renewable technology each time .. that is one way...
Another way.. is someone of your skill with words.. is to write an editorial.. Which are Free submissions.. to say your local papers and to the main papers in your area/state. Like for me .. it is the Boston Herald & Boston Globe... papers like that ...
A person like yourself.. Damn .. could actually start a Website / Newsletter .. write it in 'speak' that the common every day person could understand.. same with editorials.. People who are interested and are for it know where to go online.. we are driven their mostly by our acceptance of it..and logical appeal... we know it works.. but those on the fence or are afraid to go down that tunnel.. will not aspire to do so..

Exactly.

I do from time to time, there is a limit on submissions within a time period so I have to space them out. The next phase I have in mind is to present the results of a test experiment I plan to run this summer producing a mixture of hydrocarbon fuels from grass to my local town board. See if I can get them interested in pursuing a pilot program to evaluate it on a municipal scale. Maybe have them take it to the county.

Don't forget that colleges/universities have their own papers too...
