Ron Paul is on track to end the GOP presidential race in second place. But his refusal to directly take on the man who's ahead of him — Mitt Romney — has Republicans wondering: What does Ron Paul want?

The Texan has made a habit of voting against legislation supported by his party in Congress, making clear that his allegiance is to his issues — civil liberty, fiscal conservatism and limited government — and not to the Republican Party.

The reason Ron Paul is moving around Mitt for now is because he intends to make it into a two person race between him and Mitt.

He's going to try and make the electability thing swing in his favor. For example, most of the others besides him and Mitt aren't even making in Virginia.

That doesn't mean that just because people's favorites or least bad aren't available that they will choose Paul. But it does mean forcing lines to be drawn one way or the other.

I don't really think he wants actually wants the others to drop out too early, since more options drain Mitt's votes too given that Ron Paul's support is much more enthusiastic. But the point is to craft the perception to the voters that their only choice is Mitt or Ron Paul.

I will laugh so hard if it turns out that Santorum and Gingrich end up endorsing Mitt later on.

Ron Paul wants a voice, a platform. If he can become the republican nominee, which is still a longshot, he will have it.

He isn't really seriously thinking about a third party run, but keeps the vague threat of it alive so just so the GOP can't sleep easy.
