MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow rehashed the Boston Globe‘s highly-disgusting, animal-cruelty-alleged anecdote of the time Mitt Romney strapped his Irish setter, Seamus, to the roof of his car during a family road trip.

Maddow detailed the gruesome, bodily-fluid-soaked details from reporter Scott Helman's 2007 report:

The white Chevy station wagon with the wood paneling was overstuffed with suitcases, supplies, and sons when Mitt Romney climbed behind the wheel to begin the annual 12-hour family trek from Boston to Ontario … Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon's roof rack. He'd built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.

[...]

As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. "Dad!" he yelled. "Gross!" A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours. As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.

Romney's a freakin schmuck.. The poor dog was freakin Sick .. not the kind of 'sick' Romney is.. physically sick like the dog was.. What a Freakin way to treat a family dog.. freakin moron... I wouldn't want him with that kind of freakin judgment governing over anyone higher than someone who is picking up trash along side of the road.

The link to the 2007 report is just one part in a 7-part series. Very interesting reading, apart from the dog incident, and I recommend it.

Yeah, you have to wonder about a guy who doesn't know enough to treat his dog better than that. Hiring a dog-sitter would have been better -- hire the neighbor or some neighborhood kid who could use a few bucks. (but even here, Mitt shows he is unaware that others might need or want a job) Even putting the dog into a kennel would have been better.

So wouldn't it have been just as easy and more humane to strap the LUGGAGE up top, and put the dog in the back?

What you suggest as far as getting a sitter / kennel.. would be too difficult for them to obtain through thought alone.. although good ideas..

You mean.. no.. you cannot mean.. like normal people who care about their dogs?

Yes, CMlawyer, that would have been the best solution of all -- and surprising that Mr. Romney, who prides himself on logical problem-solving, did not arrive at this eminently logical solution. Yikes, could this mean that Mr. Romney is overselling his talents in that department?

No legs on this at all, of course I come form a part of the country where dogs ride in the back of pickup in a carrier or not.

Riding in back of a pickup is much different, and they usually are not being carried on freeways at freeway speed, just around the countryside. Also the cab is shielding them from most of the buffeting of the wind.

using this story to attack romeny is just stupid. I have only had a couple of dogs that didn't love the wind. Around the country side at speeds of 45 - 70 on back roads, sometimes paved sometimes not.

If this horrified folks I'm just sure they would be mortified to know that pretty much any meat they eat was crammed into a trailer and hauled down the highway.

What doesn't make sense to me is how they got a dog that size down from the car, hosed off, and then back up into the crate on the car.

Even if they took the crate down, heaving a dog that size, plus the weight of the crate, would have been a remarkable feat of human strength. This doesn't add up.

I'm wondering if the dog, crate, and car got hosed without ever taking the down out!

When I first heard this story a couple of years ago, I didn't even know who Romney was, BUT, because of his insensitivity, I did NOT like the man and thought he was cruel. What got me was that they hosed off the dog (cold water) and then put the dog back into the same carrier on the car roof.. wet, cold, sick and miserable. Romney told the story and thought it was funny.

He treats people the same way he treated that dog... insensitive .. disrespectful... and could care less about whether they have a job or not ..which he would strip the workers of their jobs (Bain)
