The deadline to apply for a funding opportunity for the SunShot Incubator Program for Soft Cost Reduction is January 16, 2012.

What if all cars cost more than $75,000 today? How many of us would own one? This is exactly the situation your great-grandparents may have faced before Henry Ford changed the world by thinking outside the box. Through innovative assembly line processing, he democratized automobiles, making the Model T something most Americans could own.

Interested entrepreneurs, IT professionals, and finance experts can seek backing for their solutions by applying for up to $500,000 to develop a prototype for an idea, or around $1-2 million to take an early stage product to a version 1.0 launch. We have approximately $7 million waiting to fund the next big, innovative idea through the SunShot Incubator Program for Soft Cost Reduction. But you have to hurry. The deadline for concept papers is January 16, 2012. Take a look at the Funding Opportunity, then get ready to reduce soft solar costs.

This appears to be a prime example of one thing that is wrong today... Why does everything have to be government funded. Business has lost their balls... Everyone wants a risk free guarantee to making a fortune using free money then they pay themselves handsomely and walk away because it's personally more profitable to fail than succeed in this model. Did Henry Ford have the government fund his Model T... The opportunity is there for someone to seize but nobody is doing it because the government is fouling the enterpurnial environment. as long as government money is backing some of the players the people with real skill and guts won't get in because they would be at a disadvantage.

The government cannot pick who should get funds because politics gets in the way and then the slick BSing scam artists win not the people with knowhow and talent.

..and your response is why generally we are in the circumstances that we are in.. For freakin decades way before Nixon the government has been making LOANS and Grants.. if they hadn't many of the Military wouldn't be in a home, the farmers would not be producing.. and so many other freakin things.. One eyed viewing of how Government works without opening ones mind, is why this country is in the mess we are today.. You and everyone else should be Thanking the hard working people in the agencies that provide for the common good, the health of this nation, and everything else that goes with it.

IF it were not for the Government.. You may not of lived past 40.. IF it were not for the Gov. Disease would be plaguing this country.. IF it were not for the Gov. the things you eat and use would not be safe for consumption or to use. So thank your lucky stars that the GOVERNMENT is in your corner creating the kind of country that allows you to sit and communicate with other people around the world... by telephone and by computer.. The government demands it for its people.

    Bob Nelson.

We're seeing more and more reasoning of this sort. Encouraging.

Somebody will have a "light-bulb moment"!

Bob .. would that be one dimensional thinking - closed minds ?

The only radical thinking on the other side is hate, bigotry, and complete discourse for this country.

    Bob Nelson.

"Radical" just means "very, very far out on the spectrum". Can be "radical right" or "radical left"... "radical fundamentalist"...

In this instance "radical thinking" on generalizing solar power might mean "how to shut it down"... but i don't think so!

This part seems to have disappeared so here it is again.

Id hate to see a governmnet funded iPad or iPhone but it would certainly be worse than the old Windows Mobile devices.

      Starseeker,

If it weren't for government investment in semiconductor, computer technology, and the arcnet we would not have an ipod, ipad, mac, microsoft, apple oracle, cell phones, etc. We wouldn't have nationwide electrical service, highway system, television, cable, radio, air travel, automobiles, etc.

All of these businesses and sectors got tremendous help in the early days from government investment. The results of that investment were then applied to consumer products and services.
