WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today recognized four leading organizations for expanding the market for electricity produced from renewable energy sources during the 11th annual Green Power Leadership Awards in San Francisco, Calif. These organizations’ innovative “green power” programs provide consumers with the opportunity to purchase clean energy from environmentally-preferred sources, such as wind and solar energy.

According to the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory:

  • About 860 utilities offer green power programs in the U.S.
  • Annual sales from utility green power programs have more than doubled since 2005.
  • Between January 2008 and September 2011, twelve utilities or third-parties have developed community solar programs.
  • Annual green power market sales increased to more than 35 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2010, with an annual growth rate of 31 percent since 2006.
  • More than 1.8 million customers purchased green power in 2010 through a green power program, competitive marketer program or a renewable energy certificates marketer.

The sector is starting to grow and like cell phones and computers it will soon enter an exponential phase. I think the forecasters will be amazed at the rate of growth by 2020. I am estimating about a 2000% annual growth rate by then.

I see something like 90% of residential buildings having an average of about 5 m^2 of PV panels by 2020 and adding another 5 m^2 every couple of years. Then replacing the original panels with newer, more efficient panels once the available space is covered. The inverters are now built into the panels, so there is no added cost of upgrading the inverter or adding them as the power capacity increases. An inverter to pull some of the power off to generate hydrogen will be needed at some point to produce fuel for vehicles and some backup storage. The rest will go to the grid to supply energy intensive industries during their peak usage. This will earn every PV owner an additional income.

As soon as word gets out as to how much net metering is earning people in income from the utilities, the number of installations will skyrocket. "I can make money buy installing this technology!", this realization will revolutionize the renewable energy sector.
