A new study shows that toxicperfluoroalkyls, which are used in surface protection treatments and coatings to keep grease from leaking through fast food wrappers, are being ingested by people through their food and showing up as contaminants in blood.

According to Madbury, regulators who approved these chemicals for use with food and other products made three assumptions, which have now been proven wrong:

1.The chemicals won't migrate from paper into food.
2.The chemicals won't become available to your body.
3.Your body won't process these chemicals.

I rarely eat any fast food, but I do use non-stick cookware even though I have some cast iron cookware. It looks like I will be using the cast iron more from now on. I really prefer cornbread baked in my cast iron skillet and pancakes or potatoes cooked in my cast iron skillet.

Yummy!! Cornbread.. is one of my favorites.. heat the pan.. pour the batter.. stick it in the oven.. voila'

One question.. How do you stop yours from getting a little rusty? Do you seal it in a coat of oil? If so which one?

I use a little Crisco on a paper towel after washing. And if I let it sit in a cabinet without using often then I have had some minor rust.

The key to great cornbread (at my house anyway) is to always use bacon grease in the batter and to coat the pan it is cooked in.

Some good tips on cast iron can be found at

How do you stop yours from getting a little rusty?

If I have any, I use leftover bacon grease and high-heat the pan for a short time before putting it away. Otherwise, I use vegetable oil.

Yes, I save bacon grease for cooking with to add a little flavor sometimes. It's great for browning stew meat. The first time I made bacon and used the leftover grease to make a fried egg and bacon sandwich for my fella, he literally moaned and said "God, I love you." ;-)

Bacon grease is a must have in the South....I think it must have used for everything at one time, and some "old timers" probably still do.

I make a conscious effort to get back on oils/grease everywhere that I possibly can...but biscuits and gravy (made with bacon grease/flour/milk), eggs fried in bacon grease and potatoes fried in bacon grease is my favorite meal that only happens 3 or 4 times a year ... but I would have it everyday if I could.

In the meantime, we have oatmeal or bran muffins with banana or chopped apple, or oatmeal pancakes / waffles with homemade syrup, or ham/sausage with fried eggs or omelets (fried in olive oil) and toast when those breakfast cravings hit whether it is morning, noon or night. And it's all pretty darned good....but it doesn't compare to bacon, potatoes, biscuits and gravy.

And I fry potatoes in oven that are coated with olive oil and cajun seasoning when I must have fried potatoes.

I remember we use to save bacon grease.. .. and mother use to save the oil she would fry fish in to use it again for that.. one time my sister and I had a 'baking a cake' contest.. and my sister accidentally used the oil from frying fish.. lol .. and we use to make the cake from scratch...
