The new assessment recommends a daily vitamin D dietary allowance of 600 milligrams for most healthy people 9 years and older (with an estimated average requirement of 400 International Units per day—and no more than 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day). People 71 years and older should take 800 mg of the vitamin per day, according to the report. (Children aged 4 to 8 years should not have more than 3,000 IU/day and those aged 1 to 3 years should not have more than 2,500 IU/day.)

Wasn't it just yesterday that we had an article warning us not to take too much of it? And I said that, "just give it a bit, we'll see an article stating the opposite soon." Didn't expect it this soon, though.
Anyway, a lot of the "recommended" daily allowances for various vitamins and minerals are set just at the level that prevents gross deficiencies. Numerous nutritionists recommend that the levels for optimal health are actually far higher.
Well the one thing the article didn't touch on is overall blood levels.. 6 months ago I finally managed to get a referral to a endocrinologist.. I had put on weight and no matter how much I exercised or ate, I couldn't lose 1 lb.. something wasn't right..
The Endo drew blood (more than I had given at the clinic lol) and ran every known test. Yes my thyroid was "normal" but I was extremely Vitamin D deficient.. The Endo explained that if I was a teenager, with my level, I would have had rickets (brittle bone disease). My level was 11. I take 50K units weekly for the last 6 months and my level is now up to a whopping 29.. whew heww.
I still have a long way to go, she wants me up over 60. I have to admit I feel better than I have in a long time. I have also lost 10 lbs which is amazing to me lol.. Apparently your thyroid works, but not efficiently without Vitamin D... after much homework, I have come to discover that using common sense, 90% of your functions rely in some part to vitamin D.. Even my stomach doesn't bother me as much as it used too... You won't hear me complaining, it works.
