This is scary for pregnant women as Listeria can cross into the placenta and infect the fetus.

As long as the turkey gets cooked to the point that it "steams" - Listeria is killed and turkey is therefore, safe!! =)

The one way to assure that is do not dress the bird.. cook it without the dressing/stuffing in it.. many people get sick by not cooking it up to 170.. the stuffing is not cooked fully, and the turkey is over cooked.. I watch Alton Brown - Good Eats.. LoL

Listeria - yum, yum (jk)

Most healthy people don't get sick from Listeria. weRdoomed, if a pregnant woman is infected with Listeria and it crosses the placenta the fetus usually dies. If the infection is later and it doesn't cross the placenta, but is transmitted during birth, the baby will often get meningitis that without treatment is 100% fatal. So, it's very serious for fetuses and babies. Usually the adults that get sick from listeria are elderly or immune compromised. In fact, for cancer patients, Listeria carries a 60% mortality rate. Part of the crappy thing about Listeria, is that refrigerating it doesn't kill it (many pathogenic bacteria die in the refrigerator) - but, no, Listeria has to go and be all cold resistant and survive in temps down to 4*C.

weRdoomed, didn't you say you are pregnant right now? Just be careful - don't eat deli meat, hot dogs, soft cheeses and be sure to thoroughly cook your veggies.

Huh!? I thought you could eat a hot dog if you cooked it!! I am pregnant, Summer (thanks for remembering!) and seem to still manage to make errors in judgement!...the hot dogs were nitrate free!.... =(

LOL, Yeah, you can eat hot dogs if you cook them - I just added that because, well I wouldn't eat a hot dog regardless. They are nasty!!At least the hot dog was nitrate free. I didn't mean to scare you - I should've been more clear on it.

    When are you due?

Eeeek, listeria is nothing to screw around with! I've had it three times and almost died each time from it. Oddly enough, two of them happened on New Year's Eve, and I have a terrible phobia of that day now for this reason. Basically, you shake violently and vomit endlessly until your organs are torn and bleeding and you're hospitalized for dehydration and transfusions. I remember begging anyone within earshot to just shoot me and be done with it. It's...really awful. I stop eating after Christmas and won't start until after the new year. It has a long incubation period, so it's nearly impossible to determine just what it was that infected you.

Not fun. Not fun at all.

Megidolaon: WOW!! Most healthy adults don't actually get sick from Listeria and when they do, they usually get meningitis and endocarditis. Your presentation was certainly strange - which may have more to do with why it was hard to determine what bug you actually had. Listeria usually isn't that hard to ID - but, if you have an unusual presentation, they are less likely to think Listeria, making it more difficult to identify. You must have had a really strange case. I'm glad you recovered ok.
