Most states have laws concerning going to0 slow on roads as well as going too fast. The bottom line here is going too slow can obstruct traffic and be just as dangerous as going too fast. Although it does sound like going 34 in a 40 mph house zone really shouldnt have made her get that ticket and i hope that she wins in court and gets it thrown out.

With the Economy the way it is.. people should be aware that all laws in many areas will be enforced.. too many people have been getting away with things before that will not be allowed now... I do not blame the cop.. he was merely doing his job.. Slow pokes can endanger lives on a highway.. there are many laws for the roadway.. people better study up on them.

You know you are absolutely correct here. The sad thing though is that isnt about public safety as much as it about collecting money. IMO there needs to be a balance there. And if this was indeed at 10:30 at night on a road that had light traffic i dont see why the cop would feel the need to give her a ticket. I agree the cop was just doing his job, but it doesnt sound like he was doing his job for the greater good as much as for the ticket money for his municpality.

As far as this goes... I am glad to see it.. The world would need help if I was in charge.. lol

I live next to a road that is 30mph.. you would be hard pressed to find anyone going under 40.. it is also a school zone .. again hard pressed to find anyone going under 40.. most of the day they go around 45-50.. there is a way to calculate speed.. my property is 150' parallel to the road.. although it is higher in the other 3... anyway.. 88 feet per second is 60 mph apprx. and if it takes less than 2 secs.. then their going over 40.. a cop asked me one time how can I tell without a radar gun.. and acted like I was talking a foreign language.. which I have that affect on some..lol

IF from the top of law enforcement do their work by enforcing the laws all the time.. instead of being wishy-washy about it.. then people would recognize.. for the most part that they have to follow the law or get cited.. I was talking to a cop friend of mine.. and he mentioned that on one street here in my town people were not following the speed limit.. so for one week different hours of the day.. for about 3 hours.. they had a marked cop car checking speeders.. the people by the end of the week had slowed down dramatically even when he wasn't there...

I say .. enforce the law.. no written or oral warnings.. the way to slow the speeders down.. is to hurt them in the pocket.

If she was indeed under the minimum good luck to her on that argument. The part that sucks about that kind of driver is that they do actually think they are a safe driver when in reality they are a road hazard. Her ticket may seem harsh but it's the best way I know of to make people more aware of the fact that they are a hazard.

I get what everyone is saying about going to slow, but the speed limit was 40 mph. Is it a +/- 5 mph to calculate the minimum and (allowable) maximum speed? I've seen signs that say speed limit 50, minimum 40, but I figure unless marked there is no minimum speed limit. Although, one could be cited for reckless driving/hazard on the road - whatever the citation might be categorized.

Not saying the cop or driver is wrong or right in this situation, just curious as to know what the minimum speed is suppose to me. (And if this is common knowledge, perhaps I should have read the driver's ed manual better - or again as it's been a while =P)

Don't feel bad Jme - I have no idea what the minimum would be in at 40mph. zone either. I know our city hwy min is 40. This morning I got stuck behind a fellow who "merged" onto one highway at 20mph and then when we "merged" onto the main city highway we were at a whopping 25 mph. I put merged in quotes because it's really not merging when the highway is turning into a cluster.. of people dodging and swerving to keep from running right over top of you. How's come they never catch the ones like that guy??

Merging is like one has a Yield sign.. its a cross between stop and go at your own risk...one is suppose to ease out slowly if it is 'safe to do so'...

These Yield signs on entry ramps to highways .. people pull out as fast as they can.. but it doesn't entail 2 other lines of traffic to move over.. so the person entering can get in.. it means that the person coming onto the highway must go when it is 'safe' to do so.. but it doesn't work like that...

Usually if I can get up to highway speed or at least very close, I don't have any trouble merging in. Occasionally there will be the neurotic driver who freaks at the idea of me being ahead of them and guns it but that's not typical thank goodness.

it means that the person coming onto the highway must go when it is 'safe' to do so..

The folks around here seem to think that means you come to a complete stop at the end of the entrance ramp and then wait for a semi to come along then pull out slowly. But then again our gene pool is in serious need of chlorine!

    lmao..

I just love the ones that get up to 70 or so.. and zoom out into traffic.. "Watch out for me, I am getting in there no matter what"

Ha, sounds like here in Hawaii. Mind you, our freeway on ramps are about 20 ft long. It's ridiculous here. I like to think people merging would try to match the flow of traffic not conform it to their speed and halt smooth moving traffic, but that's asking for too much.

I understand giving someone a ticket if there is traffic flowing at say the speed limit, 40 mph, and someone is causing traffic to back up going 34 mph, but this incident had no traffic, no other cars. The cop was just trying to make his quota. That annoys me a lot. Back in the day (meaning before my time), my dad's cop friends would come over in the middle of the night and ask him if they could write him a bunch of tickets to meet their quota. Of course, then the tickets didn't mean much, I guess, because he'd be okay with it. They still have to meet their quotas now, but have to do it "legitimately," so they tag people for minor infractions that would usually be overlooked.

I'm not sure which is more of annoyance, that they don't enforce all the laws all the time or that they have these laws that are (can't think of the word)... anal retentive/something of that nature that can be enforced when they feel like it.
