The way food is "processed" could be a contributing factor. It may be "tainted" when it is purchased.

poultry.. if anyone has smelled bad poultry can tell from a block away that it is bad before they even unwrap it from its packaging... hamburger the same..

When I worked in a grocery store after school.. I had the occasion working in the meat dept. where they were making ready the turkeys for T-day... 4-5 weeks before they would take frozen turkeys.. put them in a large sink of cold water and thaw them completely.. then take them and rewrap them.. and put "Fresh" stickers on them for sale.. most of them would come back to us with this gawd awful smell and slimy exterior... The practice that the store had was illegal..taking pre-packaged from the processor.. fresh frozen turkeys, thawing them, then re-wrapping as we know is illegal.. what surprised me the most even with what the store did.. was that some people wouldn't notice the stink until 1 day before..and come in with their turkey wanting a replacement... and one could smell a bad turkey on top of Mt Hood if it was miles away..

This is no surprise. Watch Food, Inc. I haven't been able to eat chicken since. Disgusting the way humanity treats animal species, there has to be a better way.
