Commonly referred to as EEE, the disease claimed a horse in rural Lake Wales and another in rural Frostproof, according to county health officials. Neither horse had been vaccinated for the disease, according to local and state medical officials.
“This is a high risk area,” said Dr. Lori Shank, an equine veterinarian who spent more than two years handling most of the ambulatory equine calls at Lake Wales Veterinary Hospital until they stopped offering that service. “As these recent cases show, horse owners and area residents need to take the threat very seriously.”
