Meet Jennifer LaPenta. The Illinois woman, 19, was jailed Monday after a judge was offended by the t-shirt she wore to a friend's court hearing. LaPenta, wearing a black shirt with the message, "I Have The Pussy, So I Make The Rules," ran afoul of Judge Helen Rozenberg, a Circuit Court jurist who handles misdemeanor and traffic cases.

They say that T-shirts are the bumper stickers of pedestrians; freedom of "speech" is not in the courtroom.

Although we have the so-called "Freedom of Speech".. there should be some reigning in at times..as to the content on the shirt.. it is vulgarity more than it is anything else.. and not apropos for the kids that may see it..

When I was younger - I had reason to come before a judge. At the time I was wearing a tube top - I was young and didn't have any change of clothes with me because I was picked up wearing that. One of the guards walked up to me and passed me a jail shirt while in a passage-way and I said I don't need it but thanks. He said very plainly, firmly but politely....the judge won't like seeing that inside the courtroom it is in your best interest to cover up, and I said...but it says JAIL across it!!!! He said trust me that is better than going in the way you are now. The guard was older than me knew the score with this judge ...I put the shirt on....went before the judge he heard me out and was actually very kind . To this day I am glad that guard did what he did...when you are as young as I was you think you know it all and it isn't until you finally grow up and realize how friggin' stupid you were. There is a certain amount of respect that is needed in the courtroom. But I can guarantee I wasn't as STUPID as that girl....knowingly walking out of your house and into a courtroom wearing that.

My city's court will not let you in unless you have dress clothes on. They have 1 bailiff who sits at the main door and directs everyone to the store next to the court house which just happens to sell dress clothes. Even if you have 5 minutes to appear and no money they won't let you in.

She is now reportedly considering a lawsuit over her garment-related bust.

I wonder what t-shirt she will choose to impress the jury?? This one might garner some sympathy.

Or maybe a print of this little saying.

When you go into court you are putting your fate into the hands of twelve people who weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty. Norm Crosby (born September 15, 1927)

Thats me, I landed a month long trial that put me behind on all my bills. Several thousands of dollars lost. $15 a day for Jury duty and unless you wanted to walk 10 blocks in the snow you paid $10 for parking a day.

Every single business owner and college student was given a free pass. Judge told me tough @!$%#. Next, time I will just talk to the Defendent in the hall and play stupid the next day when the Judge asks me why.

Although in Massachusetts the pay is a little higher, and in some instances it is free parking... I was selected 3 times to be on a jury.. the fourth time I got tired of it.. so on the form given I wrote something like this: I believe in the military style of justice, that one must prove their innocence...And that in some cases the media influences bias against the defendant and is ridiculed in the press, which makes it more difficult for a person to have a fair trail...and I do not believe that I could look at any case that has been in the press honestly and fairly.

I was selected as a Juror.. after I sat in the seat and once all jurors were picked the defendants lawyer excused me and one other person..and I haven't been selected since the early 90's...

I was working full time making a hell of a lot more than $50 a day.. and I do not know what it is in anyone else's state.. but my employer must pay the first 3 days..after that the state picks up on it.. and $250 was chump change for me at that time..

Seriously? You're defending this ignorant loser?

I hope they checked to make sure she's a legal US resident.

I don't know her to support or call her an ignorant loser. I am making a statement of the overly hyper sensitive people running around and over reacting to complete BS. The Judge could of handled this in a more professional manner and just asked her to leave the court room, instead he goes on a power trip and will end up in a civil law suit. Complete waste of time!
The same with the VP of the school...Complete over reaction over a T-shirt. Makes me wonder who is the "loser" and who are just acting their age.
I don't agree with the over reactions.

Give me an fing break how much did it cost the tax payer to put this girl in jail.  She didn't cause anyone any discomfort she didn't hit anyone or steal anything. She wore a shirt. If the judge was so upset she could have asked her to leave the court room. Case closed.  Instead it probably cost tax payer at least $1000 money that could have gone to a better place maybe the judge needs to go to jail for a couple days and she might understand that sending people to jail for such ridiculous reason is just ridiculous

Judge Rosenberg over stepped her authority. She should have simply asked the baliff to ask Ms. LaPena to leave the courtroom as the shirt was causing a distraction from the court proceedings. If Ms. LaPenta refused, she should have been charged with contempt of court and fined. Jailing soomeone just because you are personally offended by the print on a shirt is assinine to say the least.

However, there are only two places a person should refrain from wearing such apparel---Court and Church. Show a little respect people.

Please cite the authority that the judge violated. The judge was explicit in stating hers, but you question her citation, so you'll need to quote yours.

If a policeman pulls you over for speeding, he may use his discretion if you're getting someone to the hospital, etc., but he's still legally entitled to ticket you for breaking the law. It isn't something that is decided by people in the habit of commenting on other people's shoulds and shouldn'ts. The girl was disrespectful to the decorum of the courtroom. The judge deals with this every day and knows her limitations. She determined this girl was over the limit and acted on it, citing her legally. Unless I see something that is documented by a legal authority, that does it for me. And, BTW, thank you, Judge.

The punishment must fit the crime.

The girl was disrespectful to the decorum of the courtroom.

That's no reason to jail her. If everyone was jailed for an allegedly offensive t-shirt the jails would be so filled up that there would be no room for the real criminals - thieves, rapists, murderers.

It doesn't matter in the least why the Judge did what she did. ANY person going into the court, even as an observer, needs to show respect. Most parent's have raised their children to know better, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have *taken* on this young *lady*. Sad.

Always blame the parents. That's the way it is. Don't consider that, the woman being an adult, has her own life and makes her own decisions - none of course have [very likely] anything to do with her parents.

A person raised should resemble the behavior or the respect that they see in the behavior of their parents.. Monkey see.. Monkey do...

IF the parents swear and communicate between themselves and the child hears/sees it..when the parents disrespect authority... then they too start to mimic the parents towards authority..

Kids learn from their parents.. behavior is copied from their parents.. and as well the judgment that the kids learn from their surroundings...which for the first 18 years is in the parents home.

There are many kids where they reach a certain age rebel against their parents.. that is one thing.. but many kids do not.. IF my child did that no matter what age.. the neighborhood would see me kicking their arse down the street...

Not always. I've met people who have a-hole parents but the kids are the complete opposite. Kids aren't as stupid as you think they are.

I fully support Freedom of speach but have some respect!!! These people that show up to court in flip flops, ripped shirts and pants have no respect. My mother worked for lawyers and judges and TRUST me they judge you by what you are wearing and how you present yourself. I would NEVER allow anyone to go to court with me for anything if I thought you may end up as a bad reflection on me. Not saying you need to wear a suit to traffic court but at least dress nice, comb your hair and brush your teeth. A neat looking appearance goes a long way with how the judge will judge you. It works!

There is an old saying which I cannot remember at this time that deals when you are meeting and greeting people for the first time.. It only takes seconds for a person to either put you in a negative or positive light..

I watch many of the court shows on television.. and most have discussed this same thing.. the question to the litigants have always been.. "Where did you think you were coming?" Right there it will sway a Judge and if a Jury.. What the Judge says can have influence...

Or perhaps the point the judge was trying to make was about rules and not body parts. Telling a judge you make the rules is a definite step backward for your case or the case of the person you are with. At any rate, the final score? Moron: 0; Darwin: 1.

Hooray for those who serve us in robes. There is propriety in our country's courtrooms. This young woman obviously also has a poor self-image that she thinks all she has to think with is her vagina. She lacks confidence in her brain and has no ability to communicate with it. A sad commentary on a few women in our society and the men who encourage such an attitude.

And you base that all on the shirt she wore? Do you know this girl personally?

She lacks confidence in her brain and has no ability to communicate with it.

You lack the confidence in your brain and have no ability to communicate with it as you seem to think any girl who wears a shirt like this girl wore is white trash.

I am tired of the constitutional violations against Americans. The judge should locked-up the Principal who sent the kids home for wearing the American Flag on cinco de mayo. Last time I heard, we won the Spanish-American War, "REMEMBER THE ALAMO". The polish waved their flags in our face, because their president died, if he was so great then go back to Poland. American has become out of control with politicians, judges, lawyers, banks, insurance companies, and Wall Street. My opinion, this Judge should be flogged or at least water-boarded for his Nazism in the Courtroom, a sacred place for our U.S. Constitution.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I get tired of people insisting that the Constitution gives people the right to behave in non-ending immaturity. I get tired of society having to *raise* the adult-age children that their parents failed to do. I get tired of people constantly quoting the Constitution and Declaration of Independence when they don't even know what it says or means, using it as an excuse to behave like a temper-tantrum 4-yr-old. I get tired of people using economic systems to describe political systems, and not even accurately, and not even ever having any Civics class or learning to be able to make that argument. I get tired, yes...

Spare me the freedom of speech bit! Most of you are right stupidity and bad taste is not against the law..but wouldn't that be grand? Jail time..I think that was over the top. I think she should have been asked to leave and that would be that. This is a problem though. There are a lot of kids that do not know appropriate behaviors that are taught first in the home. You should see how they show up to get a work application and INTERVIEW! These upcoming kids are the ones that will be taking care of us..THINK ABOUT IT! If one can show up to a COURTROOOM with the word "pussy" on their shirt and not referencing a cat, our future is in great big trouble. This is more than just showing up in court sporting inappropriate clothes, this is having no scruples and a lack of propriety. I'm not saying that it was right to make an example of her, but it couldn't hurt to start showing these kids that there are consequences to poor choices.

You're correct... The influence from birth is in the home.. and children are representative of what you learn, and how one behaves/or not in public. Responsibility and respect are two things that should be by the time a child is in their teen years.. but too many parents are wrapped up in their own little worlds..
