A young mother was horrified when she found a cigarette inside a McDonald's Happy Meal she bought for her son.

Nicky Holloway spotted the unsmoked cigarette at the bottom of a box of food her one-year-old was happily tucking into.

'I went straight back to the restaurant and demanded to speak to the manager,' the 21-year-old said.

I would be completely livid had this been my 2 year old grandson but I don't think it warrants a lawsuit for crying out loud. We expect at least some care taken when serving food to youngsters but accidents happen.

IMO take the gift and freebies and let it go. I don't think it was done on purpose and the child was fine so why blow it out of proportion?

Virginia.. I am a skeptic.. It could of been her ulterior motive in the first place.. a plant and then say she found it.. trying to make 'easy' money....

That's true and a thought I also had but I was giving the benefit of the doubt. But how does the quote go? Methinks she doth protest too much?

I can see being angry that the baby could have gotten ill but so angry that she won't accept an apology and free food? It's worth suing for a baby to be exposed to a cigarette that wasn't lit and the child never touched?

Get real! lol

What I don't get is that she claims the baby could have become ill.

That baby, no matter how much she claims, cannot open a box, pull out components, unwrap them and consume them. I'd be surprised if the kid could do much more than grab a fry.

If she's irresponsible enough to let him dig into a box unaccompanied, then it's completely her fault.

You're correct on that quote Virginia... the people I know would just bring the meal into the store.. get their free meal.. and let it go after that.. Mistakes can happen.. I have gone to restaurants ordered my food.. and there was a hair in it... I called over to the waitress to mention it... luckily it was in my salad...and she did not charge me for the meal.. Fillet Mignon.. Because I know one thing complaining in a restaurant does not always for a happy chef..

Tiredofit - It was her brand too..(I bet)...

Dustin - Exactly why I automatically thought there is something fishy.. along with my skepticism .. Also I do not know of any McDonalds. that I have been to in the past.. where smoking was allowed or someone had access to their cigarettes while working.. and I am sure management would not allow their employees to have a pack of cigs open and in a person's shirt pocket.. Not too many packs of cigs that I know fall out of a pant pocket into food??

Well it was mcDonald's. She is worried about a cig while feeding her kid a box of chemicals. The cig was probably the healthiest thing in the box.

For heaven's sake. Did looking at the cigarette kill the child? Harm it for life? Cripple the poor child? Or did the mother harm the child beyond repair for being so silly?

Something's not right here...

The child was harmed by having a mother like that...unfortunately

If this "mother" is starting her 1year-old on McDonalds, why not let him start smoking too? I mean; why even give this kid a fighting chance at a healthy life at all? (sarcastic) lol.

Okay...here are my thoughts...50/50 she put the cigarette there herself. If she's really worried about her childs health, why is she feeding him a burger and fries at McDonalds to begin with? How old is the kid..2 or 3 years old max? (didn't see in the story...maybe i missed it, but the picture leads me to believe...). The cigarette was probably the healthiest thing in the meal to begin with! Just a little rant, but come on!!! If getting a settlement from Mickey D's ends up being that easy, i think i just found a whole pack of cigs in my super sized triple meat combo (or whatever the biggest meal there is)!!!!!!!!

Before the woman that spilled hot coffee on her lap.. to the present.. there has been a lot of whack jobs trying to get something for nothing.. defrauding businesses all over to make some "easy money".. They do not realize - once you open the door to the integrity of it.. it isn't easy money after all. If McDonalds presses this case.. Which I would.. private investigators could find out what brand she smokes.. and if it is the same kind of cigarette.. her case goes out the window...and she ends up with jail time..

I believe I read the child was just 1 year old. I have a 2 year old grandson and even he doesn't manage to open his food by himself generally speaking. I mean he can but me or his mom usually open stuff and give him portions we don't just hand him the box.

Worse Peter it was a 1yo child ! Mom should be turned in for cruelty to her child ! I won't feed my 25 yo McDonalds. I love my kids to much, hell my dog won't eat it so it can't be good. :)

It is a lot better and cheaper - if you really want a burger - to buy a pound.. and cook your own.. one could get 4-6 hamburgers out of a pound .. plus you know it is somewhat fresh.. fresher than a fast food restaurant that buys them all frozen from a slaughterhouse.. and it could be the day the USDA inspector was looking the other way..

Just a way of raising a child that will later on sit on her /his own couch donated by the taxpayers via welfare, section 8 housing, with food stamps to buy its own burgers and fries later...to stuff a cigarette into a bag and say - I found a cigarette in my meal...

If it were me behind the counter.. I would of asked the woman to show me the cigarette.. take the cig.. then ask what brand she smokes...then call the police and have her arrested for trying to defraud McDonalds.

OH my I guess I am a "negative nelly" these days but I sat here this morning wondering, will this child grow up be a smoker, then sue because McDonalds made them start smoking at a young age !

Just a question to the poster. You say your skeptical. Could it have anything to do with the mother being 21 years old? What if she was 41? Would this still be a "skeptical" story.

I wish I could slap this woman. You're concerned about your kid eating a cigarette but see no problem with letting a ONE-YEAR-OLD eat McDonald's?? Like several other people have already said, the cigarette was probably the healthiest thing in there. And that kid looks like he's been gobbling fast food for quite a while.

This money-grubber obviously planted the cigarette for money. Probably to pay for mountains of junk food to feed her kid (and herself).

I'm not surprised at that reaction from mcdonalds employees.... they don't exactly hire the cream of the crop of society
