Nova Scotia's veterinarians have banned themselves from cutting the tails and ears of dogs for cosmetic reasons.
The Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association made amendments last fall to its code of ethics that go into effect next Thursday.
The vets have been given a six-month grace period to prepare their clients for the new rules that say vets across the province will no longer be allowed to perform these surgeries.
The vets say docking a Doberman pinscher's tail and cropping its ears, for example, is unnecessary and cruel.

I've always thought the act to be a cruel one. Even if you were worried about your dogs looks, don't they look better when they aren't disfigured? I say "bravo Nova Scotia, bravo!!!!"

If you wouldn't do it to your kid, why would you do it to your pet?

Tail docking has been banned for well over a decade in Australia.

I have a wonderful Doberman. She was 8 months old when we got her and she had been docked and cropped already. If we got her as a puppy I would not have had it done. It is terrible! To cause such pain on such a sweet dog is criminal.

I am glad that someone has finally come to their scenses about this horrible tradition. It is cruel to cause such pain on an animal for no reason. I remember when I was a child there was this guy who would do this "job" in his barn for a small free. These poor animals where lined up and just had their ears or tails cut with no pain medications or anyting else. It was horrible. I am sure this still goes on. There is a special place in hell for people who do this kind of thing.

I wonder if they ban the declawing of cats. I think that is a cruel practice too and it should be banned as well.

Give me a break! It's the same thing as a circumcision! I'm sure most people that have their animals docked a clipped do it the proper way-with anesthesia and bandages. My family had pups that needed this done so they could be aka registered and they were just fine. Besides, animals and humans are completely different. I love animals, but spare me you're "they're just like my children" speech.

These people that would risk their lives for their pets (which is a little off topic) are nuts and need to wake up. There is no way I would do that and if it were my family member or friend that lost their life and saved the life of a dog/horse/cat/whatever, I would way rather have my family member or friend around than that animal!

Humans and animals may be different and have totally different values in their worldview, but all feel pain - SURVIVAL ALERT.

I wouldn't kill a fly - unless it bothered me, and wouldn't cut your dog unless necessary. But since you don't feel your son's pain, I'm sure he'll be circumcised to show that you are religious.
