Yes.. if the guy is financially secure.. then that would be a good way.. unfortunately in the U.S. it would never fly.. because we have no custom like that.. and a woman in the United States do know how to speak up, and men are out numbered.. ;)
...and the men know that the women would form their own card game and try to pawn off their husbands...for the infamous 'honey do' list :)
