On a rainy Tuesday morning, Lanie Sutherland cooked up a big brunch with sausage and biscuits and homemade preserves. She brewed coffee. She served sweet potatoes.
And, oh, yes!
She dished out some squirrel gravy, too.
"People used to fix sweet potatoes and put the squirrel gravy on it," said Sutherland, who grew up on Sandy Ridge, near Duty, in Dickenson County, Va.
The 63-year-old Sutherland comes from a large clan. She's one of nine children.

Go ahead and make fun. I used to have an inlaw that was a hillperson. She was one hell of a cook too. My ex-husband was one of the most talented cooks I've ever had the personal pleasure of sampling. We went camping once with a shortage of supplies. He made chili out of a can of tomato soup and some extras, it was the best chili I ever tasted. People make do with what they have.

I went to a restaurant in the middle of nowhere, Louisiana. In this restaurant they touted everything as being immediately fresh...so I along with everyone else ordered the alligator.

It was SCARY as hell watching from the porch dining area as the cook wrangled an alligator in their farm nextdoor but, that gator was MUCH better than the stuff I had days earlier.

I'm also the kind of person who believes that you get by best in cooking from scratch. I eat better on the same budget that my friends have that consists of ramen noodles.

Dustin... I like growing my own veggies.. because I know they are fresh.. and I am the one that processed them. There is an old saying - what you do not know, won't hurt you..

I prefer knowing..

I grow some veggies but, I mostly grow beans, squash, and tomatos. Interestingly, those items in conjunction with my herbs that I grow make a killer veggie southwestern chili. :)
