EIGHTY files are to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) by a garda team investigating fresh complaints of clerical child abuse.

The complaints were made after publication in May of the Ryan report, which detailed horrific physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by members of religious orders.

The revelation comes as gardai turn their attention to investigating priests in the Dublin Archdiocese who are the subject of the Murphy report, which was published this week.

Believe me when I say that I am not astonished by this from the Catholic Church... remember this went on in the Boston area too... and being a former Catholic when that practiced it over 50 years ago.. (no practicing since) - that this is not surprising to me....

What I question is the other religions in this process... where there is smoke there is fire.. like an ice berg we only get to hear/see part of it.. I wonder if in the other religions they hide also the facts surrounding them in regards to sexual behavior?

Simplistic Reality

This stuff just never ends. The Catholic Church all through history has been bent on power, control, and abuse. While else would they have their own sovereign nation in Italy answerable to nobody. The Church is literally "The State". How anyone can be a Catholic in good conscience is beyond me imho. To many lies, twisting of the bible, sainthood, etc, etc, for me to accept.

My mother's side of the family were all Scots-Irish Catholics. My mother went to public school because she was left handed. The nuns would beat her mercilessly with rulers when she tried to use her left hand for writing and such.

This stems from the latin word SINISTRA meaning left. If a person entered your home with his left foot first he/she wished you ill. The word "SINISTER" derives from this. So carry on this train of thought to an ill informed organization who derives many practices and language of the Ancient Romans and you have LEFT_HANDED=SINISTER.

I took 4 years of Latin. I know what sinister and dexter mean. The idea that people who wrote with the left hand were evil arose in the middle ages. The literacy rate was very low at that time. The church controlled schools. How did left handed people learn to read and write to become evil?

My brother-in-law was left-handed. He attended a Catholic school and was literally forced to learn to write with the other hand. He is now right-handed.

I had a best friend in grade school who was a leftie; the nuns never tried to force him ot write with his right hand. I was in grade school from '63 to '71.

He would have graduated high school in '76. Every time he used his left hand they would rap his knuckles with a ruler. My daughter is also left-handed and went to Catholic school but is only 21. They didn't do anything like that to her (not that I would have let them).

My experiences with teachers in my Primary school are I was forced to use my right hand but because I used my left I was considered wilful. that's not the worse my own father called me cackhanded,I spent several months at a special school because assuming I was lefthanded ment I was backward which means many different things but mostly slow learner.

Since the I found lefthanded people have better eye hand cordination then righthanders,Our artistic skills are better, oh of course it's our righthand side of the brain that controls our left hand. There are many web sites dedicated to lefthanders to many to mention. Finally to those supertious righthanders who think we lefthanders follow the left hand path a curse upon you.

If I was a televangelist.. it certainly would not be about saving souls.. it would be putting Lobster dinners on my table, nice estate, cars, maybe a private plane so I wouldn't have to deal with the public common carriers.. many homes/apts.. so when I am traveling I do not have to stay in a hotel.. many cars.. boats for relaxation... Well.. many of them have that and more. Money is the root of all evil next to religion and some in politics.

How convenient that the Pope is silent on this. And once again the church is protecting the abusers. Most of the funds paid to the victims in Ireland didn't even come from the church. It came from the taxpayers and the church has refused to give any additional funds to compensate the victims. Taxpayers are still paying for it. Talk about adding insult to injury. When is the world going to get some balls and end this so-called church? There is no end to their complicity in all of this. It's disgusting.

BelindaK - I feel that the Catholic church isn't the only one with the funny business...if one digs deep enough and investigates more.. I bet you will find things like this in almost every religion.

Religions in general are born out of hope and dispair, and people seeking comfort. The people look towards someone/thing to embrace that will dissolve those things they wish to be relieved of. In today's world.. it is mostly money .. If you believe something long enough it becomes apart of your fabric.. like a bad odor that will not wash out.

Well, there may be the odd case here and there, but I think if there was anything else this systemic we would be at least hearing hints of it by now. Only time will tell, but it does seem to be almost exclusively the Catholic church.

If one searches deep enough and long enough we would find that almost every religion has had its morals tested...

Although the Catholic church has had the most so far.. does not mean that other religions do not have theirs in a closet hiding just under the blanket of protection from their leaders.

I disagree. I don't believe you'll find any other Christian denomination with this type of scandal within their ranks, not this much this regularly over this long a period of time, no way. Not to mention the Catholic Church's willingess to cover up, pay off and otherwise CONDONE this type of action by allowing priests to continue in the priesthood and even draw retirement benefits as well.

            Wrong as usual Dylan:

In the spring of 2002, when the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church was receiving unprecedented attention, the Christian Science Monitor reported on the results of national surveys by Christian Ministry Resources. The conclusion: "Despite headlines focusing on the priest pedophile problem in the Roman Catholic Church, most American churches being hit with child sexual-abuse allegations are Protestant, and most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers."[xxi]

Finally, in the authoritative work by Penn State professor Philip Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests, it was determined that between .2 and 1.7 percent of priests are pedophiles. The figure among the Protestant clergy ranges between 2 and 3 percent.[xxii]

            State of denial Dylan?

DUBLIN -Roman Catholic Church leaders in Dublin spent decades sheltering child-abusing priests from the law and most fellow clerics turned a blind eye, an investigation ordered by Ireland's government concluded Thursday.

Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who handed over more than 60,000 previously secret church files to the three-year investigation, said he felt deep shame and sorrow for how previous archbishops presided over endemic child abuse — yet claimed afterward not to understand the gravity of their sins.
