Two of the leading candidates for the US Senate from Massachusetts vehemently defended Representative Patrick J. Kennedy of Rhode Island yesterday in his uncommonly public dispute with the Providence bishop, saying the Catholic Church is acting exclusionary.

I believe in separation of church and state.. the church is dictating and a form of blackmail/extortion to whether Patrick Kennedy can receive communion.. because he is Prochoice. The church has overstepped their boundary..

The Catholic church and other religions should have their tax exempt status taken from them.

What are your feelings on the "Legal" aspect of them holding communion over the head of P. Kennedy in this way?

Chris Matthews took that bishop to task last night--he kept asking the bishop what punishment a woman who seeks an abortion should face and the bishop kept hemming and hawing and finally admitted no punishment. Matthews then pointed out that writing law is a difficult, delicate process that clergy isn't designed for...it was a good interview.

I missed it unfortunately.. I saw the Bishop at the 6pm news hour.. and he was acting so arrogant.. like he is on a pedestal and this is really beneath him..

Matthews chopped him down a bit and showed that he isn't interested in criminalizing abortion but sticking his nose and views into secular laws.

Now say 80 Hail Mary's and 25 Our Fathers.. and 30 Act of Contrition..

I thought that was crazy.. kneel in a box.. while some priest in a window can see you.. and tell you what and how many to say.. do they have a card that they have devised and within ranges if you sinned?

Membership in the Catholic church has dropped 30% in the last 20 years in New England and the region is decidedly pro-choice. If I were running for senator on the Democratic ticket I'd be bashing the Bishop's decision too.

Rightfully so.. not only for political gain.. The actions of this priest is political.. and one of threats, and not forgiveness.. Say one thing they do another.. If I was a politician I'd have that priest investigated.. see what dirt can be dug up.

If Kennedy disagrees, then he needs to take up with the church. I see this as between Kennedy and his church on a personal level. If it was me and I felt I needed to vote for abortion, then I would leave the church that condems me for it.

The Kennedy's leaving the Catholic church would be like building a house without a foundation.. they are so inter-connected.

They are inter-connected in New England at least, where the vast majority of Catholics are very liberal and already at odds with the church over their stances on abortion, gay rights, and the handling of the the pedophile priests. Church membership has been plummeting over these issues in the northeast and publicly ostracizing the most popular Catholic figures in the region won't help the situation.

Procuring or supporting abortion practices is a mortal sin in the Catholic church, and if Kennedy acts against that teaching, then he, literally, is not in communion with the church, and as such he should not take communion. And if Catholic teaching on this matter does not suit him, he certainly can find a home in some other church. The church has no obligation to change according to the rules of the society that it is in, and Americans have lost touch with that fact, behaving as if the church is any other retail store or business that ought to change its policies according to customer demand.

No one is looking for the church to change the rules.. the catholic church butt in to Kennedy receiving communion by saying that they recommend he not... they did that because he is a pro-choice advocate.. so they are playing politics with P.K.

The Church also finds that divorce, adultery, the death penalty etc. are also mortal sins, but I have never heard of them going after a politician for divorces, affairs or support of the death penalty, have you? They seem very unbalanced in whom they go after.

the catholic church butt in to Kennedy receiving communion by saying that they recommend he not...

I don't see how the church can be butting in with their own rituals-?

they did that because he is a pro-choice advocate.. so they are playing politics with P.K.

Do you really think that the catholic church has had nothing to do with the politics of getting Kennedy's elected?

This would be very naive and seems Kennedy is a hyprocrite.

He needs to decide where is loyalty stands...to his religion or to his job. If he can't perform his job duties because of his interference with his religious beliefs, then he should step down. Or, if he wants to be loyal to his district then leave his religion. Many people have to make these decisions based on conflicts.

As far as going after others for divorce, affairs...I haven't heard of any being made public. As far as this incident...I believe it was Kennedy who decided to make this public.

nohandouts.. Like TheJonesGirl wrote.. where are they when someone on the Right .. Like Ensign and that Sanford moron do things.. where are they in talking about that?

You do not single out a person .. because he is pro-choice.. and that is why they singled him out because he is.. and they stated it so.. A person in this country is free to believe whatever they wish.. I like raising my right hand compared to my left.. if someone told me because I raise my right hand I cannot have what other right handed raisers have.. Is that not Discrimination? Like the Church did to P.K.?

Ensign and Sanford are not Catholic...

I dont remember the church reprimanding B. Clinton either.

Is that not Discrimination? Like the Church did to P.K.?

Well, you don't know that......how can you possibly know about all the decisions the Catholic church has made towards what they consider sins.
