KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Airport officials in Kansas City say a passenger jet struck a flock of birds shortly after takeoff and returned to land safely.

The Frontier Airlines flight took off about 7 p.m. Saturday night bound for Denver when it hit the birds at an altitude of about 4,000 feet.

Air travel is simply not what it should be. From gouging airfares, ridiculous baggage fees to increasing cost cutting aircraft maintenace, soley to make more profits, is only putting the flying public at increasing and unnecessary risk. These factors however have no bearing on the bird incidents that seem to becoming more of a risk factor as well. The point is that we need to have other alternatives to flying. A nationwide rail service would be a good start. Just one persons opinion.

Rae - have you investigated how much it cost to go from the east coast to the west coast? I did about 4 years ago.. I remember a cost of around $1,400 and 3-4 days by train.. and many people like myself.. I do not trust the safety of the rails and with the light of many problems with drivers Texting/sleeping accidents...and the maintenance that has not been done on the rails stretching across and around the U.S. one is taking their life into their hands.

This past spring I looked into rail travel as an alternative to flying from Las Vegas to Mississippi. For a family of 4, it cost more than plane tickets and it took 3 days of travel. I could drive there faster.

Exactly ! This is why people fly/drive - I wouldn't drive from the east coast to the west coast.. I get tired just driving to the store and back.. well.. I shouldn't say that.. I am scared to death of other drivers.. if that is what they call them these days..

The last time I flew - my arms got tired...

Actually I booked way in advance about 6 months.... to fly from Providence to Sacramento - and it cost me for two tickets $500 round trip.. and I went Delta .. I always plan ahead... also I did it online through Delta.. got to pick out my seating .. two seats when available.. The train 3-4 days and $1,400 per person w/cabin - I wouldn't want to sit on a train for 3-4 days..talk about bad back and aches..

Just returned from a trip to Houston. In the future, I will only fly if I have no other option.

It might be a hassle to fly now a days.. it is the fastest mode of transportation.. If one expects something.. then one makes plans for it..
